The best part about having an email list, is that you are the one who is in control.

You can send out product offers to your list, or even just tell them about a great new article that you wrote to try and get some more traffic to your blog.

It's not the same as your blog where you have to wait for people to visit and then just hope that they see and like what you are offering.

When you have a list, you already know that the people on it are people who are interested in what you have say. Otherwise they wouldn't have given you their email address in the first place.

This is where affiliate marketing works great. If you find a good product, you can give your list an oppurtunity to purchase it. You want to make them feel like they are getting special inside information, or a chance to buy it at a better price than everyone else.

However, you don't want to ever spam your list, they have to be able to trust you. Show them that you aren't just trying to sell them something.

You want to give them good up to date information for free. Then after you have earned their trust, you can offer them a product here and there. Try to email them only 2 or 3 times a month, unless they signed up for a weekly news letter.

Make sure that you are smart about how you manage your list. Once you send out a product offer, take the people from your list that purchase the product, and make a special list for those people.

An email list is a great way to generate a lot of money. I am sure you have heard the term "Targeted Traffic", well it doesn't get more targeted than a list of people that you know are interested in your blog's topic.

Today I am going to give you a good tip on building your email list.


For your blog visitors to give up their email address to you, they are going to need a good reason. I recommend giving them something for free.


You could offer them something like a weekly newsletter from your blog, a free product download, or some sort of information that isn't available everywhere.

If nothing that I have mentioned gives you an idea of what you can offer, Google free downloads with Private Label Rights. Try to be creative.

Then when you find something to offer your visitors, set it up so that you can give it to them if they just enter their email address. If you set up an AWeber account like we discussed yesterday in the Building An Email List post, they have information on how to do it correctly.

Just try to make sure that it is something people are going to want.

Building an email list is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your blog. With an email list you can send out information, links to your other sites, and even product offers.

There are a lot of free ways to build an email list, but I would recommend using AWeber Communications. They are one of the most used email auto responder services out there.

When a person likes a website or blog, they will usually come back or even tell other people what they liked about it.

This is a good thing for people building a blog because visitors are an important part of making money with Google AdSense and affiliate marketing. Without visitors there would be nobody to click your AdSense ads.

So I like to make it easy for people to return to my blogs. I put bookmarking buttons at the bottom of each one of my posts, by placing code in my blog's template.

Not everybody likes to mess with the HTML on their blog. An easier way to add a bookmark button to your blog is...

• Go to www.addthis.com
• Select your service
• Select a button style
• Decide if you want analytics for your button
• Then "Click" Get Your Button

If you are using Blogger.com, just click "Add To Sidebar". I would recommend placing it close to the top of your blog, under the heading "Bookmark This Blog", or something along those lines.

There is really only one way to increase your blog's Page Rank, and that is by getting backlinks to your blog. Luckily there is more than just one way to do that.

This is a topic we have discussed before in "Building Backlinks To Your Blog" which was the 14th post in this month's "Build A Blog Workshop".

Even though this isn't the most important part of building a successful blog, it is definitely something that you should work on. By having a high Page Rank you can earn more money from advertisers.

The easiest way to build your Page Rank would be the natural way. Which means people visit your blog and like what they read enough to link back to your blog from their site. The only way you can have an impact on this is by writing good quality content. Hopefully you are already doing this.

Another way is by asking people to exchange links with you. Look around and find other websites and blogs that are on the same topic as your blog. When you find some that are worth linking to, offer to exchange links with them. (You post their link on your blog, and they put your link on theirs)

Or you could try placing a code with your link in it, on your blog that asks people to link to you by posting the code on their site. You might not get a ton of back-links this way, but every link counts.

At this point of the "Build A Blog Worshop" you should be posting almost everyday, using an afilliate program, and posting tweets to your twitter account.

Even though you might not be getting a ton of traffic right now, doing these things will help you to have a successful blog. But there are other things you can do to help you get your blog noticed.

One thing you might want to try is writing articles. If you write an article with your blog's link in the signature, then submit it the to the article directories, you could see a lot of traffic to your blog.

The best way to get the right kind of visitors to your blog, is to write an article that is on the same topic as your blog. This way the people who are reading your articles, are more likely going to be interested in getting more information on the subject.

Plus if the people reading your article really like what they see, they could very well become loyal followers of your blog.

There are over one-hundred article directories out there for you to submit articles to. If you submit articles with your blog's link in it to even half of those directories, you are likely to get a lot of back-links too. Which of course is important for building your blogs "Page Rank".

Their are a lot of good reasons why you would want to buy your own domain name. Some say you are more likely to show up on the first page of the Google Search Engine. However I have seen a lot of blogs with a Blogspot sub-domain name on the first page results, for some pretty popular key words too.

Another good thing about having your own domain name is that you will have a much shorter web address, which is good because then people are more likely to remember it.

Having your own domain name looks more professional than a sub-domain.


On the other hand a sub-domain name is totally free. Another bonus is, you don't have to worry about all of your personal information being registered out there for telemarketers and junk-mail.


When you purchase a domain name all of your information, like your name, address, and phone number, is published in a directory for anyone to see. However, you can usually purchase a privacy gaurd to protect yourself from prying eyes.


One other benefit of a sub-domain name is you can still pick out a good web address. With the .com domain names, a lot of the good ones have already been taken.

When it comes down to it the choice is yours. I am still using a sub-domain name for this blog, the Bloogle AdSense Blog. It's still less than a year old, but I get pretty good results in the search engines.

Either way you still have to worry about the same things like SEO, posting often, and monetizing your blog. If your blog is only a few weeks old and is showing a lot of promise, you might want to buy yourself a domain name now rather than later on down the road after you have established your blog and are getting good results in the search engines.

A good example of this is my other blog, HCG Diet 411, which I started about 6 weeks ago and had it listed in Google within a week. My HCG Diet 411 Blog did so well the first few weeks that I decided to buy my own domain name now before it started to do any better.

I wanted to build up my new blog under it's own domain name because I already saw how good it was going to do. This isn't typical with every blog though, but if it does do good right out of the gates, then why waste time building back-links and put all of that time into promoting it, just to have to start all over when you do buy your own domain name.

If you do make the choice to wait and then get your own domain name later, the loyal readers that you have will follow you.

Blogger makes it real easy to switch to your own domain name when you are ready. Plus you can still host your blog here for free either way. If you have your sub-domain listed in Google, your new domain will get listed much faster.

The reason this happens is the Google Bot will come back to crawl your blog for new content and it then spots thead new domain name 

I bought my new domain name for $1.00 for the first year through Go Daddy, by purchasing a .info instead of .com. If you are interested in getting your own domain name right now I would suggest getting it through  just follow this link and create a good domain name for your blog.

Being able to grab attention with the titles of your blog posts is not a hard thing to do. You just have to know how to do it, and how to do it right.

In yesterday's "Build A Blog Workshop" we discussed how to find the right "Keywords For Your Blog". Today I will give you some tips on creating Attention Grabing Tiltles.

When a person does a search using Google or any other search engine, the results that show up are usually blogs or websites that contain the keyword or phrase that you are searching for. When a blog shows up as one of the results, you will usually see the blog post title in the header of the result.

If you can create titles that draw people's attention to it, you will find yourself getting a lot more visitors to your blog.

Here are a few things that you should focus on when choosing your post titles:

• Use targeted high traffic keywords.
• Keep it short and simple.
• Try putting the keywords at the beginning of the title.
• Re-use the keywords from the title in the actual post.
• Be creative and try to make it original.

75% or more of your blog's traffic will be coming from search engines like Google. So it is important that you draw peoples attention to your blog in the search results. The best way to do this is by using the tips above.

Having the right keywords for your blog is essential to building a good blog. When you use the right keywords for your blog, you have the potential to get a lot more traffic from the search engines.

Keywords are the words that people will use to find your blog in search engines like Google. So it's important that you get found for the right ones. If you are using a lot of keywords on your blog that people never search for, your blog won't get much traffic to it.

To make sure you are using the best keywords for your blog topic, you want to go and use a keyword tool  to find them. I prefer to use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, it's free and it tells you how many searches are done for a certain keyword every month.

All you need to do is, go to adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and type in your blog's topic. The Google Adwords Keyword Tool will then suggest keywords for you to use.

Then, after you find the keywords and phrases that get a good amount of searches each month, you want to include those keywords in your blog posts.

Make sure that you don't over do it. If you use a keyword so many times in your post that it doesn't sound natural, re-write it, because the search engines will know. It's called "keyword stuffing" and Google can spot this from a mile away.

As I have said before, you want to write like you would talk. Read your post as you write it and if it doesn't sound right, just fix it. Also, make sure that you spell the keywords correctly too. If the keywords aren't spelled right, your blog won't show up in the search engines for that certain keyword.

To build a great blog you will need to have good loyal readers that follow you. The only way to do this, is by being able to write a half-way decent blog post, and to put a little bit of yourself into what you write.

To gain those loyal followers, you have to let them feel like they're getting to know you. Try to put a little bit of your personality into your posts. You want your readers to feel like they are reading something that was written for them personally.

I have found that the best way to do this is, to write like you would talk. Kind of like I am right now. If the people that are reading your blog feel a connection with you, they will have no problem coming back week after week to read your latest article. Those are the types of followers that we all want.

A great tip for today's "Build A Blog Workshop" is for you to re-write your profile and throw in a few personal details about yourself. (But not too personal)

For example, my profile tells everyone who visits my blog that I am 30, my son Tyson is 9, and Aiden is 4 years old. Everybody also knows that I have been with their mother, Suzy, for the better part of 16 years now. For those of you that did the math, that's over half of my life.

I have this rule that if I can't hear myself saying it, I'm not writting it. So try to do this with your blog and the loyal readers will start to follow.

Selling products on your blog is a great way to earn some extra cash. If you don't have a product of your own that you can offer, don't worry you can find products out there which can earn you anywhere from 5% to 75% of the sale.

So if you are like most people that are new to blogging, then you haven't yet created a product. That's okay, most people never do. However, you can still have some great products to offer your visitors by joining an affiliate program.

This is something I have done for a while now. I use a number of affiliate marketing programs, but the one that is probably the most popular and well known is Clickbank.

Clickbank has hundreds if not thousands of digital products that you can choose from. It is usually best to offer a product that is on the same topic as your blog. The people visiting your blog are there usually because they have an interest in what your blog is about.

If you don't find a product to offer your visitors that is in your same niche from Clickbank, you might want to think about offering a product from Amazon.com. With Amazon.com's affiliate program, you can offer pretty much anything that they sell on their website.

To join one or both of these affiliate programs just go and sign up, they're both totally free!

To sign up for Amazon.com's affiliate program go to affiliate-program.amazon.com and click the join now for free button. Then fill out all of the information that they ask for.

After you get signed up for their affiliate program, just pick which products you want to offer then follow the directions for adding them to your Blogger.com blog. It can be done with just a couple of clicks.

To sell Clickbank's products go to clickbank.com and click on the Promote Products tab up at the top. Then click the Sign Up button and fill out the information form. After you are signed up for Clickbanks affiliate program, you will go and find a product to promote then you can place that link on your blog.

I would recommend placing your affiliate product somewhere toward the top to get your visitors attention. You could even write a post about the product and place the link in your post too.

There are a lot of different SEO tips and tricks that you can use for your blog these days. Today I am going to teach you about one of the most important.

How To Optimize Your Title Tag For Blogger

 To get started you will first need to use an HTML editor. If you don't have one click here to get one for free.

First copy and paste this meta tag into your HTML editor.

We are about half way through the Build A Blog Workshop. So I wanted to write this article about keeping your eye on the prize to help keep you motivated.

Part of building a blog and becoming a great blogger is setting goals and dreaming big.

Everyone at one time or another, has dreamed of being somebody famous. Who hasn't fantasized about being a big movie star or musician? And I know we've all dreamed about winning the lottery or somehow striking it rich?

You might be dreaming right now, maybe your dreaming of becoming a "Pro-Blogger" and quitting your day job. However, this dream might be closer than you think. 

Most people have big plans and dreams for their future. Sadly for most of us, our plans and dreams never become reality. Instead of getting to experience these exciting adventures in life, we get caught up in our boring 9 to 5 jobs and paying taxes, we never really take those crucial steps to make our dreams happen.

Life would be so much better, if only we could learn to aim higher. The biggest reason that most people can never make their dreams come true, is that we have trained ourselves to think, I can't do this, That's impossible, No one could do that.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, you will never be able to break past what you believe to be impossible. But, if you reach too far up into the clouds without working toward your goal, you will find yourself hanging on to an impossible dream. Which I think is even worse!

You see the focus here is not to limit yourself. You want to aim high and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic.


Just think, if you had told someone one-hundred years ago that you could send mail (email) from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were crazy. But, through desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now a reality of our everyday lives.

If you were to ask any "Pro-Blogger" out there about how they got to where they are today, they would tell you hard work, discipline, and a lot of sleepless nights behind a computer screen.

So keep on dreaming! Don't get wrapped up in your own perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to reach those goals. As you get closer to reaching your blogging dreams each day, you will see that your dream is almost a reality.

If it is your dream to make a living as a Pro-Blogger, I say go for it. Don't let anyone try to stop you, because to do this you will have to be determined. In the beginning you're not going to see a lot of pay-off, but that can't stop you, keep working at it and you will be glad you did.

Becoming part of a blog community is a really great way to improve your blog. When you join a good blog community, you will get other members of the same community, to come visit your blog and leave you comments on how to improve your blog, or what they like about it.

This is also a great way to get some followers. If other people come to your blog and they like what they see, these people are going to start following your blog.

One of the many blog communities out there, and one that I am also an active member in, is My Blog Log. In this blog community you visit other blogs that interest you, and you start following them through that community.

• The first thing you want to do is, go to MyBlogLog.com.
• Now click on the tab that says "Join/Sign In".
• Then just use your Yahoo ID to get signed up. (If you don't have one, they will show you how to easily get one)
• Next just fill out the correct information about you and your blog.

After you get signed up you can start following other members blogs. This a great way for you to start out building your blog.

For yesterday's "Build A Blog Workshop" we talked about using Facebook to promote your blog. One of the other ways I like to get traffic to my blog is through Twitter.

Getting traffic this way is a little bit slower because you won't have a lot of followers right away, but now is a great time to start since your blog is still so new!


This is really one of the easiest things to do. If you don't have a Twitter account yet, go to Twitter.com and to create your new account:


1. Type your full name. (Use your real name)
2. Pick a username. Think of a good one because it will be seen by everyone who follows your tweets. (Mine is Briesauce)
3. Create a strong password.


Now just verify that you're human by re-typing the words you see there. After that, click "Create My Account". You can adjust your account settings after your account is created. You can also put your blog's link as your main site in the settings area.


I recommend that you start following your favorite comedians, actors, friends, and anyone else that you can think of with a Twitter account. Other people will find you, if you just put yourself out there. You can even follow me at twitter.com/Briesauce.

The more you tweet, the more followers you'll get. Followers = Traffic.

By now you should have planned your posts for 7 days out and started posting them to your blog. This is also a good time to start promoting your blog to start getting some traffic. What better way to do that than with Facebook!


Nowadays everybody from your little sister to big hollywood movie stars have a Facebook page. So I don't feel like I'm going out on a limb by assuming that most of you do too.


If you're anything like me, your list of friends consists of your family, people you went to school with, and co-workers. Truth be told, these people will probably be your most loyal readers when it comes to starting your new blog.

This is actually great because your family and friends are never going to give you a bad review. Infact word of mouth is a great way to get more visitors to your blog.


Here is how you add your link to Facebook.

• Login to your Facebook account and go to your Home Page.
• Now click where it says Links, which is located in the column on the left-hand side of the screen.
• Then click on the Post A Link button.
• Next, type in your Blog's Title.
• After that, enter in your URL and click Attach.
• Last, choose a thumbnail and click the Share button.

Now there should be a link to your blog posted on your "Wall". Every once in a while you can write something on your Wall about your blog and place your link in your message. This should also give you a nice surge of traffic to your blog from the people that view your Facebook page.

Having links that point back to your blog is huge. This tells the search engines that your blog is important, otherwise why would other sites be linking to it. That's why getting backlinks is such a big part of building your blog.

There are many different ways to go about this process, today for the "Build A Blog Workshop" I am going to teach you about 2 of them.

The 1st, and in my opinion the easiest way to get a backlink to your blog, is to visit other blogs and to leave a comment with a link back to your blog after reading the post.

Notice how I say "after reading the post". It is very important that you don't spam other blogs with your link. Otherwise this whole process will backfire and get you marked as a "spammer", and this is something that you don't want to happen. Especially if you are trying to build a successful blog.

It is always best to read through the post, and then leave a comment that is relevant to what you've just read. Don't ever just say "Nice Blog".

The 2nd, and the other just as important way to build backlinks to your blog, is to participate in forums. I recommend joining and participating in forums that are in your same niche. The reason you want to do this is, if you go and participate in a forum about eating ice cream, and your blog is about dieting, you might get some backlinks, but nobody will want to come back.

Even though your main goal is backlinks, you also want the people that visit your blog from those links to become your followers. Kind of like killing 2 birds with 1 stone. This will not happen if what you are blogging about is of no interest to them.

Be smart when building those backlinks and don't spam!

Submitting your blog to the social bookmarking sites like Digg, Delicious, and Stumble Upon is a great way to get traffic and back-links to your blog.

There are a couple different websites out there that make this task very easy to do. But I think the best one to use is SocialMarker.com To get started:

Go to SocialMarker.com
 
Under Bookmark Details type in your Blog Title.
 
Then enter your Blog URL.
 
Next, write a short description about your blog where it says Text.
 
Now list a few separate keywords where it says Tags. (Keywords are words or phrases one would use to find your blog in the search engines)
 
When you are done click Submit.

All you have to do now is just go through and submit your blog to each social bookmarking website. Socialmarker.com makes this a lot easier by putting them all in a row for you. All you need to do is just drag and drop the information that you entered in at the beginning, which is now at the bottom of the page.

When you finish submitting to the one you are currently on, just click the Next button at the top right-hand side of the screen. You will have to login to each bookmarking site to submit your blog. If you don't have an account with all of them you can either sign up or just skip that one.

This is such an important part of starting a blog because this puts your blog out there for potentially hundreds of thousands of people to see.

Now that your blog has been monetized with Google AdSense and you have submitted it to the search engines, one of the most important things you can do is track your results.

Even though you may not see a flood of traffic right away, it is crucial to know what your visitors do when they are visiting your blog.

The best way to do this is with Google's free Analytics Tool. This tool shows you everything you need to know about your blog on the web. You can see where your traffic comes from, what keywords they use to find your blog, and even which search engine they used to find your blog with.

To get signed up, first go to Google.com/analytics and click the link that says Sign Up Now.

• What you want to do first is Add A New Website Profile. 
• Then type in your blog URL and click Finish.
• After that it will tell you to Copy the following code, then paste it onto every page you want to track immediately before the </body> tag. For instructions click where it says learn more.

Blogger makes it easy for you to do this.

• Just go to your Blogger.com Dashboard.
• Then to Layout.
• Now to the Edit HTML tab.

Make sure to download your blog template before you do anything at all. That way if you mess it up you can just reload it and there is no harm done.

Google Analytics is great for trying out different ad colors and placements, it's always good to know if a change that you made does better or worse after you make it. In the future when the traffic starts pouring in, this will be a great way to test these things.

Creating content is one of the most important things you can do for your blog. You want to post to your blog often. I would recommend posting to your blog at least once a day for the first week. After that if you can keep going with the same momentum, then you definitely should.

For today's "Build A Blog Workshop" I would advise you to plan your posts for the next 7 days. For example, if you had a blog that was all about bikes, you might plan out posts that look like this:

• Day 1: Introduce your blog and what it's about.
• Day 2: Blog about a good bike manufacture.
• Day 3: You could blog about the best tires to have for riding on concrete.
• Day 4: Blog about the best tires for riding on dirt.
• Day 5: Post something about a great place to ride your bike.
• Day 6: Write a post about a good bike seat to use.
• Day 7: Your post could be about mountain bikes.

Another thing you want to remember when planning your weekly posts is, at least 2 of your blog posts for the week should be much longer than the rest. You don't want all of your blog posts to be 1 paragraph long. However if you do post to your blog every single day, a few of them can be just simple tips.

Posting something everyday to your blog, even if it's something small, tells the search engines that you update your blog often, which is what you want. Search engines love up to date information.

Today's "Build A Blog Workshop" is an important one, I am going to show you how to submit your blog to the major search engines. 

Since most of your blogs traffic will be coming from search engines, you need to make sure to get it submitted right away. It usually takes a few weeks to get your blog listed in the major search engines, so submitting it to the search engines now is a good idea. This way, by the time the spiders get around to crawling your blog in a couple of weeks, you will have a lot more content.

The first thing you want to do is choose one of the free website submission companies to use. I have used a few for this task, but I would recommend using FreeWebSubmission.com.

• Now scroll to the bottom of the page to where it says "Free Web Submission"
• Then type in your blog URL and email address. (use a valid email)
• Next check the box that says "I have read and agree to the terms"
• Finally just click "Submit Your Site"

After your blog is submitted, it will show you a list of the search engines that it was successfully or unsuccessfully submitted to.

When you are done reviewing which search engines your blog was submitted to, go to the bottom of the page and click Next .

The next page will ask you to link to them if you find their service has value. I would recommend linking to them but it's up to you.

That's it your blog should be listed in the search engines within the next few weeks. Tomorrow we will talk about your blog posts.

Today for the Build A Blog Workshop, we are going to monetize your RSS Feed. To set up Google AdSense on your Feed is so easy to do, it would be crazy not to.

The first thing your going to do is:

• Go to www.google.com/adsense and log into your Google account.
• Then click on AdSense Set Up, which is the second tab over.
• Next go down and click on AdSense For Feeds.
• This is where you pick your Ad Type. Your options are Text/Image ads, Text Ads Only, or Image Ads Only. (I use text ads only)
• After that choose your Frequency. Do you want AdSense on each feed item, every 2nd, 3rd, or 4th feed item. (I have AdSense on every feed item)
• Now choose the Post Length. AdSense Ads can be shown on Posts of any length, Posts longer than approximately 50 words, Posts longer than approximately 100 words, Posts longer than approximately 250 words, or Posts longer than approximately 500 words. (I have them show up on Posts of any length)
• Here you select the ad Position. Where do you want the AdSense ads? At the bottom of the feed or At the top of the feed. (I recommend At the top of the feed)
• For the Colors. Either Allow AdSense to optimize feed ad color choices automatically, or Let me choose my colors.
• Last, for your ad Channels, click on Create new channel and give it a name. When you are done with that click Save.

Now your Feed posts are monetized with Google AdSense. More people than you might think subscribe to RSS Feeds, so it only makes sense to have AdSense in your posts.

To have a successful blog, you need to be able to reach as many people as possible. Setting up an RSS Feed is a great way to do this. I recommend using Google's Feedburner.

To set up your Feedburner RSS Feed is Simple, I will walk you through it with these 8 easy steps.

1.- Go to Feedburner.com and log in to your Google account.

2.- Type in your Blog's URL and click next.
3.- Choose if you want Atom or RSS. Then click next. (I use RSS, but it's up to you)

4.- Pick your Feed Title and URL and click next.

5.- Copy your Feedburner URL.

6.- Go to your Blogger Dashboard.

7.- Go into your Settings, then click on Site Feed.

8.- Type in your Feedburner URL and click save settings. 

That's it, you now have an RSS feed. Now whenever you write a new post, it will automatically be posted to your RSS Feed. Make sure that you have your "Subscribe To" gadget on your blog page so visitors can subscribe to your feed.

First, If you haven't set up a Google AdSense Account yet, read this post Get A Google AdSense Account and go do that before anything else.

To maximize your Google AdSense earnings, you have to make sure to place your ads in the right areas of your blog.

First, you want to make sure to use the right formats for your blog. Statistics show that the tall skyscraper ads don't perform well anymore. I would recommend using the large square ads between your posts.

Try to use the same colors for your ads, that you use on your blog. You want your AdSense to blend into your blog.

Most people these days will skip right over banner ads. It's best to stick with text only on all of your ads for now.

If you have a couple of pictures on your blog, place an AdSense ad next to the image and this might help your C.T.R. (Click Through Rate). It should help to draw your visitors attention in that direction.

Keep the ads up toward the top and middle of the page. Using Google's text links by other links on your blog should help you to get more clicks as well.

Try to think outside of the box when it comes to your ad placement. Use your best judgment, put yourself in your visitors shoes, where would you most likely click on an ad if you had just arrived on your blog for the first time.

Avoid click fraud, that means DO NOT CLICK YOUR OWN ADS. You will get caught and that will get your account banned for life, from the Google AdSense program. Which could possibly be a lot of money that you would lose out on. Some bloggers earn hundreds or even thousands of dollars every month with Google AdSense.

The layout of your blog is very important when it comes to building a successful blog. You want to make sure that you have the right gadgets in the right places. 

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is putting a bunch of unnecessary gadgets all over their blog. You need to have a strategy with everything you do on your blog if you want people to take you seriously.

These are the 6 most important gadgets to have on any blog. (Blogger users: First go to "Dashboard" "Layout" then "Page Elements". Now down below click on "Add A Gadget" where you want to add it)

1st- Google Search Box.- Place it up towards the top right or left side.

2nd- Subscription Links.- This will go directly above or below the Google Search Box, you choose.

3rd- Profile Gadget.- I would recommend placing this above the Search Box and Subscription Links.

4th- AdSense.- Below your profile is a great place to put Google AdSense. (I'll go into using Google AdSense a little more in tomorrows post)

5th- Followers.- Put this underneath your Google AdSense Ads. You want a way for people to easily keep in touch with your blog.

6th- Blog Archive.- You want your older post titles to catch peoples attention. Put this under the Followers gadget.

There are a few other gadgets that are okay to use, but I wouldn't get to carried away right now. Just use the ones listed above and I will talk about gadgets a little bit more in a few days.

Today I want to share some tips on which settings to use for your new blog. When using Blogger for your blog host, changing your blog settings is very easy to do. First sign in and go to your Blogger Dashboard. Then click on settings.

Here is what you'll want to do next: (These are only the ones that are the most important)

Under Basic:

Title-YOU SHOULD PUT 1 OR 2 KEYWORDS INTO YOUR TITLE

Description-THIS SHOULD BE RELATED TO YOUR BLOG TOPIC

Add your blog to our listings? YES

Let search engines find your blog? YES

(The others are up to you)

Under Comments:

Comments- SHOW

Who Can Comment? ANYONE

Comments Default for Posts-NEW POSTS HAVE COMMENTS

Backlinks-SHOW

Backlinks Default for Posts-NEW POSTS HAVE BACKLINKS

Under Archiving:

Enable Post Pages? YES

Under Permissions:

Who can view this blog? ANYBODY

These are the most important settings to have, if you want to get listed in the search engines. Until you are more familiar with what each setting does, I would go by these here for the best results. The ones I have left out are up to you.

Day 4 of the "Build A Blog Workshop" is on finding a great blog template. Finding which template to use for your blog all depends on what your blog topic is. For example if your blog topic is Barbie Doll Collecting, then a pink blog template would probably be something you would want to consider.

Another piece of advice that I want you to think about is, do not use a template with a black background. Templates with black backgrounds look cool, but reading white words on a black page is hard on the eyes. Plus you don't see to many successful and popular blogs on the web, that have a black background.

What you need to ask yourself is, do you want people to take your blog seriously? If you do, then you can never go wrong with a simple, white, plain looking template. Is your blog about poetry? I have come across a lot of poetry blogs with a tan background and soft colors.

You want your blog to match what you're blogging about. Remember you can always change your template. However, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Research shows that people visiting a website or blog will leave within 10 seconds if something doesn't catch their eye. So make it look good and don't just pick the first template that you see. Look at 20 or 30 of them before you make your choice.

Day 3 of the "Build A Blog Workshop" is about picking your blogs domain name. If you have decided to use Blogger as your blog host, then you have the option of using a free sub-domain name. If this is your first blog, then this is what I would advise you to do. You can start paying for a domain name later if your blog takes off and starts doing really well. Until then there is no point in spending money if you're just starting out.

When choosing your domain name, it's important to have name that it is relevant to your blogs topic. A good example would be my blog here, my blog title is "Bloogle AdSense", which of course is about "how to make money blogging using Google AdSense". A couple of the keywords I want to get a good ranking for in the search engines is Blogging, Google, and AdSense. "Bloogle AdSense" is a combination of all three of those keywords. As you can see my domain name is bloogle-adsense.blogspot.com.

If your blog is about bikes and your domain name is bike.com, when somebody Googles the word bike, your blog will likely appear as one of the results on Googles front page. Unless of course, there are 2 million other blogs out there about bikes. This is why it's good to try to pick an original topic that a lot of people haven't done already. Like we discussed in the last post "Choosing Your Blog Topic" .

So put a lot of thought into your blogs topic and domain name. Don't be afraid to get creative, this is one of the most important steps to having a successful blog.

Now that you have found where to host your blog, I can help you with choosing a blog topic. 

Here are 5 things to consider while your trying to think of an interesting topic.

1. Is this something that you are knowledgeable about? You don't want to choose a topic that you know very little about. If you have no idea what you're talking about, people can see that and they will call you out on it. So pick a topic that interests you and that you know a lot about.

2. Make sure your topic is something that you either really care about, or something that you hate. Many people think that your blog should be about something that you love or care about. The truth is that you can blog about anything. There are a lot of successful blogs out there, where bloggers will complain about something that they dislike. If you're passionate about what you're blogging, your readers are more likely going to relate. No matter how much you love or hate it.

3. Do you want to have a personal blog, or is your main goal to make money? I'm not saying that personal blogs can't make money, they can. But when somebody goes to a blog it is usually because that blog has information that they're looking for, not because they want to hear about someones day at work. On the other hand, somebody who is blogging about their battle with cancer, might have some helpful information for other cancer patients out there. Helpful information is what will generate revenue.

4. Are you going to have something to blog about 6 months down the road? You want to pick a topic that gives you a lot of different things to blog about. A successful blogger will post something to their blog every single day or at least every other day. If your blogging about the first baseball game that you ever went to, you will probably run out of things to blog about after the first couple of weeks.

5. Try to choose an original topic. You don't want to start a blog if you are going to have to compete with 3 million other blogs that have the same topic. A blog about the war in Iraq would be a great idea. Even if your blog supports the war, you will still get people coming to your blog that are totally against it and just want to leave a comment to disagree with you about your latest post. But who really cares if they disagree with what you have to say, as long as they're reading your blog!

I hope this post gets your creative wheels turning and helps you to pick out an original and interesting topic for your new blog.

Day 1 of the "Build A Blog Workshop" is about choosing a blog host. Now this is more important than you might think. You want to find a blog host that has at least 99% up-time and nothing less. There is no point in having a blog if it's never up and running because their server is down all of the time.

This is why the blog host that I recommend is "Blogger". There are a lot of blog hosts out there, but Blogger is owned and operated by Google so you know that it's got to be reliable. I don't recall ever having a problem with the servers going down here. Another big plus, is that Blogger is 100% FREE!!!

Blogger is also one of the most popular blog hosts on the web. I currently have 2 blogs hosted here, The Bloogle AdSense Blog, and The HCG Diet Information Blog. So you can definitely have more than one.

It is important to have a blog host that allows you to customize the HTML on your blog, for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I will go over SEO later this month. Keep in mind, you can use any blog host that you want, but this is only one that I am going to recommend today. So if you have another host that you would rather use, that's fine too. However, later this month I will show you how to monetize your blog and in my opinion Blogger is the best place to do that.

I hope this takes the guess work out of finding a blog host. Tomorrow I will go over what to consider when choosing your blog topic.
